I am feeling a mixture of guilt because we could use the money
we could have raised at a car boot sale and relief that I no longer have to
worry about the stuff

Boy, can I ever identify with that feeling! I want to get rid of the stuff, but I feel guilty if I don't try to make some money on it. I still have trouble getting rid of things I think are worth selling, but I'm getting better at it.
I think you did the right thing though. The time and effort you spend to make a few dollars is better used on something else.
