Diane,

We use Bartlet's Gel Stain.  I am not sure where he gets it.  The carpenter at his job turned me on to it.  I love it.  I think he gets it at a specialty woodworking store, but I am not sure of the name.  I know they don't carry it at Lowe's or Home Depot.  Perhaps there is a website?  I'll check for you.

I know that MinWax makes a gel stain too, but I have never used it (they carry that at WalMart :)).  If you want something easy use something that is water based.  You may need more coats of stain to get the desired color but it sure beats those nasty mineral spirit cleanups (I use Naptha, VERY flammable but that is what dh brought home for me to use.).  I actually prefer the water clean up, but the gel stuff is very cool.  Also check with the manufacturer as to what kind of brush you should use with whatever you get (natural bristle or foam).  My mom used the wrong brush and it left little tiny bubbles (which could be taken out with some sanding but she won't ever do it) on a dresser that she did.  I love the foam ones.  Mom also did the dresser in 1/3rds.  She started at the bottom, stained 1/3 of the way up, stopped, stained 1/3 of the way up, stopped, ect.  You can see the lines where she stopped and started (it drives me n! uts, but that is just me).  She did a dresser that is identical to one I did.  Mine is just polyurethaned  (6 coats) and hers is stained and sealed (2 coats).  I personally like mine better.  But it was my project.  I did her stripping and sanding for her.  I know, I'm a freak.  I like folding laundry, washing dishes and sanding wood.  I find it relaxing.  If I could get a job sanding furniture, I would be one happy camper (except for the fumes and the dust).  If you lived closer, I would be happy to sand for you. LOL  Hope this helps.

and a coat of the gel stain that we usually use

Julie,

Please tell me what the name of the gel stain and where you buy it. I'm looking for a used chest of drawers for my younger ds and I'll need to refinish it. I need something that is fairly easy to use with good results - Thanks!

And for goodness sake, take it easy there. You are wearing me out and I'm not pregnant. I feel like a need a rest just from reading about it. I hope you make it to delivery early enough to solve your insurance problem. Will your dh let us know how things go?

Diane
