The Procrastination Trap and how to overcome it by, Paula Eichermuller 2002
We are all familiar with the old saying "Never leave that till tomorrow
which you can do today" yet so many of us still procrastinate. Why is it
when a task needs to be performed we find ourselves doing ~or~ wanting to be
doing something else?
There is more at stake by procrastinating than you think. I'm not just
talking about a reprimand by the boss when you turn in a project late,
rather the deeper more emotional consequences like low self esteem, self
doubt, guilt, anger etc. the list goes on and on.
Let's take a step by step look at the procrastination trap and how to
overcome it.
*analyze- What is really holding us back? Many of us use excuses for why we
procrastinate however they are just that, excuses!
Excuses we use
* Too tired
* No time
* Too many distractions
* Better things to do
When in reality we really mean
* I'm not qualified
* I'm afraid of others reactions
* Fear of outcome
When you can identify the REAL reason for putting off a project you can then
begin to move forward and take the steps necessary for starting AND
completing a task.
* Move forward- Get past the negative thinking, as this is probably your
biggest obstacle.
*Plan your project- Detail your project on paper. This may not sound like
much but it is the first step to acting on it.
* Implement-Set mini goals. Work for 15 minutes then take a break. Work for
30 minutes and so on.
*Stay on track- When you feel like you might give up again remember two
things
(1) How you will feel when you finish
(2) How you will feel if you don't
*Reward- Do something nice for your self after completing a
project, after all you've earned it.
