Like you I used to go too far one-way or the other.  I also had the problem that I just did not want to do the decluttering and general cleaning then it would get so bad that I would get depressed which made me feel worst.  It was a vicious circle one which I was unable to break.  Now I do little and often ... I have said before make lists for me really helps too.  I always made mental notes to myself of what I would like to achieve ... no-one needs to know just me and then if I am successful WELL DONE ME.

Sorry if I have rambled on a bit but some e-mail's just hit the nail on the head and I just had to explain how I USED to feel in the past.
