Clearing out a cabinet to use for the stuff on the kitchen counter is a great idea too. I keep my kitchen counters almost bare - only things that we use very regularly are allowed to stay out - microwave, toaster, fruit bowl. I keep a small blue lamp on one corner of the counter for soft light in the evening after dinner. Everything else is kept in the cabinets and taken out as needed. This makes it so much easier to wipe down the counters and keep them clean...
