Linda & everyone, Yes, I did it - I got into the attic and accomplished something~! Yesterday we had a cool front come through the New Orleans area. It was the first time in weeks that it cooled off a bit. After work it was really cool and beautiful outside. I wanted to work in my garden, of course, but I resisted... I knew this might be the last opportunity to work in the attic without the overwhelming heat until late fall.
I got in the attic with both boys and managed to re-group and re-arrange all the boxes. I swept the plywood floor in each section as we moved things. We spent about 3 hours up there. I did not do a major clean out, but I did throw away a few things and bring a few downstairs for the donation pile (which is still in the garage...). We cleared the entrance to the attic (which was completely cluttered) and grouped boxes according to the contents. Christmas, Easter, Mardi Gras, Thanksgiving, Halloween decorations are all grouped in an accessible area so I can get them out without climbing over the a/c ductwork. Another section has craft supplies & suitcases, close to the entrance. Potential donation/garage sale items are placed out of the way on one side. It is not perfect - but it is pretty good. (Does an attic cleaned incorrectly still bless your family?? - I think so & I believe Flylady would agree!) Everything I need is easy to get to. I still need to get rid of stuff, but I can get it down one box at a time - when I'm ready. I think what I've done is enough for me to get the attic off my mind for now. Much of the excess was cleared out in previous work sessions, and the entrance is CLEAR - YESSSSS!!! I feel so much better for having gotten this done. I'm ready to start clearing things out again. The weather is still beautiful & cool, so I might start on the shed after work today. I want to play "musical chairs" and move the bikes from the garage to the shed, which will then free up space in the garage. It is so hard to keep up the motivation to get rid of things, so when I'm on a roll I like to keep going. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever consider an area "finished" - or if it will always be a work in progress...
