Heather,
Something I have started doing with my 12 yo dd and 8 yo dd is making them pick up
their mess. WAIT! Don't roll the eyes and huff yet! I have a plan! I simply stand
over top them until they do it. No, it's not a perfect plan-Sometimes things sit
there for days and I end up doing it anyway (like in your case when someone is coming
over), but it's a process.

I have them do their own laundry, (with supervision-detergent and fabric softener are
far too dear to waste!), fold up, and put away. No, the clothes don't always make it
where they're supposed to, but I feel if I don't start now, they'll end up like
me...Drowning in clutter!
