The First Vice President of the Republic and the President of the
Government of South Sudan has urged all the political forces in southern
Sudan to work together in order to face challenges lying ahead.

Delivering a key note address during the opening of the 2008 second
session of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, President
Salva Kiir said all political parties need to come up with a political
understanding.

He said with the purpose of unity, divisions along the party lines will
come to and end, and the overall interest of people of southern Sudan will
prevail.

President Kiir noted that the forthcoming general elections will require
political will and determination, thus the need to work harder and ensure
that elections produce acceptable and credible results.


The Speaker of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assemble has said the
Assembly is determined to combat corruption. Speaking during the opening,
of the 2008 second parliamentary session, the speaker James Wani Igga said
there should be no excuse on corruption with the presence of the
anti-corruption Commission.

Mr. Igga asked members to look into the where about of revenues from tax
collections.


The Egyptian government has agreed to host the South Sudan satellite
channel on the Egyptian satellite Nilesat, in addition to support and
train cadres in the field of media in southern Sudan.

This came during talks held by the Minister of Information in the
Government of South Sudan, Gabriel Changson Chang, with his Egyptian
counterpart Anas Al-Faqih, during his visit to Egypt, which started last
Wednesday.

The US envoy to Sudan Richard Williamson affirmed that there is a marked
improvement concerning the situation in Darfur…

Mr. Williamson appreciated the cooperation of the Sudanese Government in
the Peacekeeping process in the region.
After extensive talks in Khartoum, Mr. Williamson expressed concerns over
the event which took place in Kalma Internally Displaced Person’s Camp in
Southern Darfur that claimed the lives of dozens of people.


Both the Sudanese and the American sides considered yesterday’s
discussions as resumption of talks between Khartoum and Washington which
stopped since the eruption of violence in Abyei last may.


The committee for the Qatari initiative which is sponsored by the Arab
league will start its works today in Khartoum.

In a joint statement after arrival in Khartoum yesterday, the Qatari State
Minister for Foreign Affaires, Ahmed Bin Abdulla, and the Special envoy of
the Arab league in Sudan said that the meetings will discuss preparations
for the upcoming peace talks in Qatar between the Sudanese Government and
the Armed Darfur Movements.

The Spokesperson of the Arab League Abdul Al-Aleem Al-Abiad affirmed the
league is only communicating with the Government so far.

Darfur General Union in the UK and Ireland handed a memorandum to the
General Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno
Ocampo.

The Memo demands prosecuting whom it has described as violators of Human
Rights in Darfur including President Al-Bashir.
The ICC prosecutor was in London to participate in a seminar organized by
the Darfur Union which was attended by a number of Darfurian Movements.

Speaking to Miraya FM the Chairman of the Union Anwar Abdul Rahman said
that the Union has introduced a number of eyewitnesses to the Prosecutor
of the ICC.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said military ammunition on the hijacked
Ukrainian ship was on the way to Kenya and not Southern Sudan.
He added that Ukraine has a certificate saying Kenya is the end customer.
On the other hand, the Head of the Ukrainian weapons export company told
the Ukrainian U.T One TV channel that initials on the ammunition shown by
the BBC do not relate to Southern Sudan, but rather indicate the Supply
department in the Kenyan Ministry of Defense.

Crude oil prices continued to fall today as a result of fears of the
impact of the global financial crisis on demand and increase in the U.S.
energy stockpiles. The banks failed in their move to reduce the interest
rates as a step to improve oil prices.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated in a report that
the United States’ move towards recession could expose it to pressure by
the year 2009.

The Russian President Dimitry Medvedev criticized what he called "the
American desire for domination" and said it would undermine Global
security.

Miraya FM, asked the economy analyst, Muhammad el-Jack, on the impact of
the crisis on the oil and investment sectors in Sudan.

The High Commission for Refugees declared the arrival of more than five
hundred thousand people from the Democratic Republic of Congo to southern
Sudan, during the past two weeks. This was because they were attacked by
the Ugandan LRA rebels.
UNHCR spokesman Ron Redmond, in Press Releases, spoke about the Annual
Conference of the office of High Commission for refugees in Geneva. He
said that the estimated number of Congolese refugees that cross to yambio,
southern Sudan daily, amounts to one hundred and fifty. He explained that
UNHCR has sent a team to the area yambio southern Sudan, to assess the
needs of new arrivals, processing them with assistance.
