The Nuer Supreme Council Condemns the Barbaric Killing of innocence children, women and elderly in Fangak & Pom, Jonglei State
February 9, 2011 Public Statement By Nuer Supreme Council (NSC) The Nuer Supreme Council strongly condemns the inhumane killings of innocence children, women and elderly by renegade and militia Dinka’s General, George Athor Deng. Athor took up arms late last year after failing to win the gubernatorial election in Jonglei to Lt. General Kuol Manyang Juok. On February 9th, 2011, the Nuer Supreme Council learned that renegade General George Athor Deng attacked Fangak and Pom concurrently. The death toll in this heinous attack is not yet known, but our sources on the ground informed the Council that 70 people are now confirmed dead including Lt. General Gatwech Chan’s wife and two children. As smooth process of referendum has already taken place without any disruption; such spirit must also remain the vital tool with which peaceful settlement of southern Sudanese civilians is amicably trapped. Also it is to be noted that, ensuring the fact of not reciprocating inhumane treatment of southerners in the past war in this current time is unacceptable We remind the general public that this attack angered the Council authority and Nuer intellectuals worldwide and condemned it in strongest terms possible. Our Council, whose aim is to advance peace, social justices, human rights, and equality is seriously saddened and disturbed by these atrocities, however, we strongly ask President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s leadership to urgently coordinate efforts to bring Athor and his accomplices to book. The Nuer supreme council calls on the government of southern Sudan to quickly address insecurity affecting Nuer public and southern Sudanese in general who are living in South Sudan by whatever means necessary. Moreover, the council urges the leadership to remain vigilant not to allow enemies of peace in southern Sudan to remain loose, and therefore, they must be brought to justice as soon as possible. Their reckless and ruthless attacks aiming for nothing but just primitive interest is intolerable. Primitive renegade General cannot be allowed anymore to operate if he doesn’t realize what he has fought for decades ago. The council urges the southern Sudanese at large to dissociate themselves with the culprit because they are enemies of peace. In the recent years or months, we acknowledged that a lot of southern Sudanese die every day in South Sudan due to foul plays. Therefore, we would like to assure the ruling party that the Nuer Supreme Council will not allow such crimes diminished without attributions anymore. We wish, all South Sudanese live in peace and harmony, but we will no longer compromise innocent Nuer’ lives without dire consequences due to boastful attack committed by primitive insurgents disrupting peace across southern Sudan. The government of Southern Sudan has allowed enemies of peace on killing sprees for so long, and now, enough is enough.
