TORIT, 24 February 2011 [Gurtong] – According to engineer Juma, the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a leading United Nations
Agency for information and communication technology issues has
considered a request by his Ministry and will allocate South Sudan a
brand new three-digit code.

The engineer further elaborated that upon determining the country’s
code, the ITU will then submit it to the GOSS leadership.

After installation, GOSS will announce its reallocation from the
present shared code +249 to its new own code. Mobile phone operators
will now switch to the new code.

The Undersecretary further explained that even Ugandan’s Gemtel
Telecommunication Company’s code including other telecommunication
companies would subsequently be dissolved smoothly and without causing
any inconvenience to subscribers.

He said that GOSS was working to adopt a new regulatory policy of the
telecommunication services after South Sudan’s declaration scheduled
for 9 July, this year.

The new regulation shall require all operators to undergo fresh
registration in conformity with the law.

He gave an assurance that the gateway will be ready in the next two
months and pointed out that the contracted company; Ericson is busy
erecting installations.
