Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), Riak Machar
Teny, has described the absence of a press law in southern Sudan as
making the region susceptible to anarchy, observing that some people
would readily take advantage of the situation. Machar spoke as a
two-day consultative conference on a free and independent press in
South Sudan kicked off in Juba, Friday.

"There is nothing to fear of the media. There would be no reason to
protect somebody who is corrupt, no reason to protect somebody who
misuses power, or arrests people outside what is provided in the law,"
Machar observed.

GoSS Information Minister Benjamin Marial told the forum that the
media bill was currently being studied at the ministry of Legal
Affairs and Constitutional Development. He said it will be tabled at
the South Sudan Legislative Assembly and passed into law before July.
