February 27, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The speaker of the Sudanese parliament
Mohamed Ibrahim Al-Tahir has announced that no Southern MP will be
allowed to stay whether he is a member of the ruling National Congress
Party (NCP) or Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM).

The South is set to officially become the world’s newest state next
July after the referendum that took place last January showed an
overwhelming majority in favor of independence.

The NCP in control of the North has declared that all Southerners in
the central government, military and civil service as well as
parliament will be dismissed once results are certified.

Al-Tahir said that the next legislative session starting in April will
not include any Southerner saying that the constitution now
automatically deprived them of that right after the referendum
results.

He cited article 118 of the constitution for his decision interpreting
it as saying that Southern MP’s have no representation authority
because the constituencies they won in are now in the south.

But the head of the SPLM bloc Thomas Wani said the move was meant to
inflict "humiliation" and "revenge" in the wake of the vote favoring
secession. They stressed that the interim period ends next July and as
such they will remain until then.

Wani dismissed allegations that they want to stay in order to continue
receiving compensation saying they receive more through their
membership in the Southern parliament.

He called on the justice minister Mohamed Bushara Dousa to resign for
amending the constitution without consulting with SPLM state ministers
in the cabinet saying he exceeded his powers.

Dousa has submitted a revised version of the constitution with the
parliament without showing it to the cabinet of ministers, a step
deplored by the SPLM bloc.
