Juba, 10th March, 2011 [Gurtong] - The South Sudan’s ruling party,
Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-SPLM has said that threats by
South’s Opposition parties to withdraw from the amendment of the
Southern Sudan Constitution 2005 will not stop the Technical Committee
progress.

Hon. John Luk Jok of SPLM who is also the Chairperson of the
Constitution Review Committee, a body charged to amend the
Constitution has told the press in Juba.

Gurtong has learnt that 9 political parties have quitted the Review Committee.

In a press statement read to the press early this week by the
Chairperson of the UDSF, one of the opposition parties, David Dechan
said that, UDF, USSP, SLP, SPLM-DC, CPS, UDSF, SSDF, SDA and NUDF have
pulled out of the review process.

The opposition opposed the need to enlarge the size of the Government
of Southern Sudan-GOSS in which they see as SPLM’s strategy to
accommodate its own cadres.

They opposed a decision to expand Southern Sudan Legislative
Assembly-SSLA which is dominated by SPLM. Over 90% of the Members of
Parliament in the SSLA are from SPLM.

Despite the Opposition’s statement of withdrawal from the review
committee, John Luk refuted the credibility of the statement saying
that, five parties were only absent in the review.

He said the Constitutional Review Committee will continue to work with
other Southern political parties remaining in the Committee Task
Force.

“These are not the only Southern political parties-(parties that
withdrew) who were appointed to review the constitution. The committee
is still working normally”, John said.

Originally, the GOSS President appointed 24 Technical Committee
members to review the interim constitution of Southern Sudan 2005.
However, the appointment which the opposition parties viewed as not
inclusive sparked critics, saying it was against the Parties’ agreed
procedures in the South-South Dialogue, a meeting that brought all
Southern Sudan political parties together last year.
