*Great Lakes Field Course – Application Deadline Monday 28 March*
The Institute’s annual residential Great Lakes course takes place this July
in Bujumbura, Burundi. The course is an intensive graduate-level programme
covering Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Congo, taught by a team of leading
international specialists, and academics and activists from the region.
Topics include the historical and political background to recent conflicts,
the role of civil society, popular culture, and the future of democracy.

*Sudan Open Archive 3.0*
In April the RVI Sudan Open Archive will be expanded to include two new
special collections: the first thirty-two volumes of Sudan Notes and
Records, Sudan’s flagship scholarly journal, and the collected papers of the
late Sudan scholar, Richard Gray. The Sudan Open Archive is an open-access
collection of historical and contemporary documents about Sudan, many of
them made available for the first time.

Among the many critically important issues raised by the separation of
north and south Sudan are the criteria for citizenship of the new entities.
Bronwen Manby’s *International Law and the Right to a Nationality in
Sudan,*published by the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa,
argues that the
negotiating parties should reject ethnicity as the basis for determining
