While speaking to the press at Juba International Airport, Dr. Siphamandla Zondi who is leading the team said that, the committee has come on a special mission for one week and will be moving in all the ten States of the virtual independent nation meeting various stake holders. He said that their mission mandate is based on the unprecedented challenges emerging in the region following the South Sudan Referendum in the previous months. “The visit is instigated by the decision of the AU to asses the post conflict situation in the region,” Zondi said. The expert said that AU is aware of the extraordinary challenges especially insecurity that rock the region immediately after conducting of the plebiscite. The team will meet key government leaders at the level of the Government of Southern Sudan, States, United Nations agencies and other related partners. He said that their work which will later be examined at the Ministerial level will act as a platform on how the Union could find possible solutions for the challenges. Adding that, it will give the Union a proper room to understand the situation of the region ahead of the post interim period. “The AU has to think to understand the situation better after the referendum,” said Zondi.
