WAU, 10th April, 2011 [Gurtong] – Butcheries and meat selling shops in
Wau town of Western Bahr el Ghazal have remained closed for 10days now
, following the recent State authority decree to reduce the high meat
prices hiked by butcheries.

Restaurants, hotels and families have complained on the government’s
decree aimed at regulating the skyrocketing meat prizes in favour of
the poor local people.
The weeklong meat supply disruption has left families and other public
food vendors to opt for vegetables.

Before the decree, 1.kg of beef was sold at 12 Sudanese Pounds (4
USD), but now the same amount of meat goes for 14 SP (5 USD).

The State authority directed the meat traders to reduce their meat
prices to 10 SP. (3.3 USD) per Kilo while meat mixed with bones to 8
SP (3 USD) per kilo.

Butcheries have remained in protest against the government’s decree
that if they reduce the meat prices, they will gain loses since the
price of a bull has also risen to the range of 1,200 SP (400 USD) to
1,800 SP (600 USD) by the auction dealers.

According to Adam Ali, a butcher-man in Jaw main market, butcheries
and meat traders have constantly closed their meat shops in town until
the State Government accepts their demands.

While speaking to Gurtong in Jaw main Market, Ali said “the Government
is asking us to reduce our meat prices while the same Government’s
monthly revenue taxes still remain high on us.”

He called upon the State Government to have dialogue with them and
find a solution for their demands so that they can resume business as
usual.
