The organizers said that they wanted many South Sudanese to know the anthem by the time it will be sang officially for the first time on 9th/July 2011 as the new Republic raises her flag. The Mapel event is part of over 200 diverse crowds that gathered on Saturday at the SPLM’s General Secretariat Headquarters in Juba for the same practices. Many groups who had been working jointly in the creation of the anthem like the Choir members of St. Kizito parish and Juba University were present during the singing practice of the Africa’s newest State anthem lyrics. Addressing the crowd at the Southern Sector, was the SPLM Secretary for Information, Culture and Communication, Mr. Bol Makueng who said that the time had come for the people of South Sudan to build in them a sense of Nationalism. “All citizens of the new Republic of South Sudan (to be confirmed by 9th July 2011), we shall have duties and responsibilities. One of them is learning our anthem, believing in it and doing what the nation requires of us,” Makueng said and continued that, “our anthem, our constitution and our flag together form the face of unity of the South Sudanese.” Makueng went on to congratulate the party chairman, H.E. the GOSS President, Salva Kiir Mayardit for standing firm and coming this far despite continued frustrations by enemies. Maj. William Ajak Deng from the SPLA also thanked the SPLM for taking the initiative to start teaching the National Anthem. He promised that the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, SPLA, band might join the practice next time. On March 22, 2011, the Council of Ministers of the Government of South Sudan partially approved the wording and tune of the anthem. The final and official version is expected soon but organizers are confident that if any changes are made, they will be minimal. According to Korsuk Nyarsuk, the organizer of the practice and SPLM National Director for Syndicated Organizations, the final official tune and wording will not vary much from the present version. “People have to start learning the tune and lyrics now, if there is any change, it will surely be in the text and it will be so minimal that it will not affect what we are doing now, Korsuk assured the citizens. This is not the first practice, earlier, the organizers also liaised with churches in Juba, who called on their congregation to turn up for practice at their premises. The organizers wish to extend the service to schools and other institutions. “We want as many South Sudanese as possible to know the anthem by the time it is sang for the first time in the independent South Sudan,” Korsuk Nyarsuk added.
