JUBA, 18th April, 2011 [Gurtong] – The Minister of Transport and Roads
in the Government of Southern Sudan, Anthony Lino Makana has confirmed
that the Ministry is working 24 hours, to make sure that the roads
under construction are ready for the 9th of July Independence
celebrations.

According to the Minister, not only roads in Juba will be tarmac but
also in other towns of South Sudan. He confirmed to have tarmacked 150
kilometres of roads in North Behr El Ghazal State and they are now
preparing to tarmac Rumbek among other major towns.

“The roads network under construction in Juba will be finished very
soon. We have now finished 80% of the bridges, and we hope to clear
the rest by the end of June. All the bridges will be ready and all the
roads will be tarmacked,” said the Transport Minister.

However, realistically it seemed very difficult to achieve this
ambition on the ground as the Minister mentioned, “The tarmac road of
Nimule - Juba road is underway to completion as 24 kilometres of the
road has already been paved.”

Makanya clarified that 17 bridges were under construction in Juba town
with support from the Japanese Government and is due completion soon.

He also mentioned that the Transport Ministry had a mega plan to
complete all the roads in the next five years to come.

“We have a plan that we are going to submit to the Council of
Ministers very soon, where we are proposing to tarmac 7, 000
kilometres of roads in South Sudan within the next five years, this is
our ambition,” Makana added.

He added that, “the Juba airport can only accommodate four large
planes in the parking area but soon it will accommodate 30 similar
planes and up to 50 planes.”

The Minister reiterated that there were diverse construction work
ongoing at the airport and it will be one of the best airports in the
region. He was certain that the constructions will be done before the
9th of July 2011.
