UN Women’s agency seeks gender equality worldwide Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:12 IWD UN Women stands to play a lead role in the global drive for gender equality, the newly-formed agency's first Executive Director affirmed Tuesday, as the world marked the 100th International Women's Day.
"Our vision in UN Women is a world where men and women have equal opportunities and capacities and the principles of gender equality are embedded in the development, peace and security agendas," Michelle Bachelet said in a statement, noting that "where women have access to good education, good jobs, land and other assets, national growth and stability are enhanced." Lauding some achievements in the global campaign for gender equality, Bachelet said women were now "participating in the workforce in greater numbers," and that some 67 countries now have laws mandating equal pay for men and women. She said women and girls were mobilizing alongside men and boys to advance political freedoms worldwide. Among other benefits in the quest for women's emancipation, she cited "lower maternal mortality, improved child nutrition, greater food security and less risk of HIV and AIDS." Bachelet termed UN Women as "a new global champion" in the advocacy for women's rights. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JFD info" group.
