According to the mayor of Rumbek, Sabit Chawop Mabor, the butchers
were arrested because they increased the price of meat without
consulting the office of the Town Council; a decision which he
described as a “a total violation of law and regulations”.
Chawop said that legal charges have been levelled against them. He
insisted that the Lakes state government would not permit an increase
in meat prices.
He explained that unlike imported foodstuffs, meat is locally produced
and therefore its pricing can be revised to the level of affordability
for ordinary people.
He called on the public to exercise patience as his office tackles the
matter, encouraging households to consider alternatives to meat, such
as fish.
In the last two days meat in Rumbek market rose by 30 per cent, from
10SDG (US$3.7) per kilogram to 13SDG (US$4.9).
