By Waakhe Simon Wudu JUBA, 3rd May, 2011 [Gurtong] - The GOSS Ministry of Health has heightened efforts to ensure that the sanitary standards of the regional capital Juba is up to date before 9th July 2011. Juba is set to be the venue for the South Sudan independence celebrations scheduled for 9th July 2011. The virtual independent nation participated in a referendum on 9th January this year that confirmed its secession from Northern Sudan. Dr. Riek Machar is the head of the GOSS Committee organizing the celebrations. Dr. Riek appointed the GOSS Minister of Health Dr. Luka Monoja to head the Health sub-committee responsible for the preparations. Last month, the Committee strategized how to maintain hygiene in Juba for the South Sudan’s Independence. The Health Committee has now involved its members in mobilizing stakeholders to collect dumped litter on the streets of Juba every Saturday. The “Keep-Juba Clean” Committee is headed by Madam Rebecca Nyandeng, the GOSS Presidential Advisor on Human Rights, whom the Health Committee in cooperated to boost the cleanliness efforts. The Committee has contracted companies that are now involved in collecting dumped rubbish in all the Bomas (villages) in Juba town that are collectively disposed off in the Juba-Yei road dumping site. These are some of the key strategies the Committee is implementing to keep the sanitation of what was once described as “expensive but dirtiest village in the world-Juba” clean. The members are also working out regulations, a guide to prevent irresponsible dumping in Juba and South Sudan at large. On Monday, the committee members were in the streets of Juba to collect rubbish along the Custom-Wazara-Juba Road. Majok Dut, a Member for Legislation in the Health Committee from the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly told Gurtong that, their work is part of the strategies to keep Juba town clean. He said that, the Committee will soon release the regulations which are currently at the Mayor’s desk. He believes that, this will ensure the town is clean, adding that, it will provide a clean and safe environment. Meanwhile, Dr. Mawien Atem, the Director General at the GOSS Ministry of Health and also Member of the Health Committee called on Juba residents to voluntarily join them in keeping the town clean. “We’re informing our people that, cleanness should not only be in the main streets. It should also be around residential areas,” Dr. Mawien said. Posted in: Home, S. Sudan Independence -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JFD info" group.
