RUMBEK, 10th May, 2011 [Gurtong] - The chief whip of Lakes State
Legislative Assembly Isaac Makur Buoc has condemned the recent clashes
by pastoralists of the State’s 5 Counties that killed over 80 people
as more people sustained serious injuries.

On Thursday last week, Lakes State Minister of Local Government and
Law Enforcement Agency Mabor Mayen Wol, was summoned by parliament to
brief them over the deteriorating insecurity in the Counties of Rumbek
East over inter-clan dispute, between Rumbek North and Cueibet,
Cueibet and Rumbek Central, Yirol East and Panjiar County of Unity
State as well inter-State conflict between Rumbek North county of
Lakes State with Tonj East County of Warrap State, Tonj South with
Cueibet County of Lakes State.

The clashes displaced hundreds of people as farming activities and
education sector in the conflict zones were paralysed.

Even after an assured deployment of government-led troops along the
conflicting areas and the imposed curfew inside Rumbek Central County,
the government needs to work hard to apprehend the instigators.

Makur said that “Lakes State youths should work hard and not use their
guns to forcefully acquire property through raiding and looting.” He
added that killing people will not benefit them.

The minister cautioned communities who lost their loved ones to avoid
revenge; he assured them that the government will apprehend the
culprits.

Makur affirmed that “Lakes State government will enforce law and order
to discipline the youths hence stop random killings and undermining
human rights”.

Most young people in the State are very idle yet they can venture into
agricultural opportunities which are in abundance instead of tribal
conflicts especially on resources, Makur stressed.

“These youths possess guns that outnumber our police forces, they are
contributing to State insecurity, they should understand that they are
not above the established system of governance,” Makur warned them.

Makur said that most of these youths had superior weapons and are more
organized, making the police not to apprehend any suspects.

“We need a strong police force, established prison authority and law
enforcement agencies. If you kill somebody, the law will punish you
accordingly,” he said.

For this reason, the chief whip requested military police and the army
to intervene due to their sophisticated weaponry hence restore law and
order in the State.
