WAU, 13th May, 2011 [Gurtong] - Western Bahr el Ghazal State’s Wau
teaching hospital staff joined the world on Thursday in honouring the
International Nurses Day under the theme “Closing the gap: Increasing
Access and Equity” as nurses marched together with hundreds of other
citizens on the streets.

All the nursing staff of Wau hospital marked the day as an integral
part of the nursing profession and pledged to discharge their duties
sincerely with conviction.

While addressing the public gathering during the occasion, the
Director of Nursing at Wau teaching hospital, Mr. Issac Natali Tulba
said that South Sudan still lagged behind in terms of qualified
nursing and urged international bodies to assist in capacity building.

“We expect possible support for our nurses in their endeavour to
provide better services in the welfare of the community,” Tulba said.

Tulba also stated that the basic service expected from the nurses is
the nursing touch, despite the fact that patients suffer from dreaded
diseases; good nursing sometimes enables them to live a prolonged
life.

He further urged the nurses not to depend on rewards while discharging
their duties but rather concentrate and be dedicated in saving human
lives.

In an exclusive interview with Gurtong, nurses working at Wau Teaching
Hospital disclosed that one nurse in the hospital attends to more than
30 patients as well as midwifes, whereas one nurse should attend to a
maximum of four patients per day.
