By Manyang Mayom RUMBEK, 15th May, 2011 [Gurtong] - Lakes State’s Sudan People Liberation Movement, SPLM Secretary, Comrade Samuel Mathiang Keer was pronounced dead in an Australian hospital on Saturday mid-night after long illness. According to the Lakes State Government, the late Mathiang spent two month at Peter Hospital in Melbourne, Capital City of Victoria State in Australia under intensive medical care prior to his death on Saturday mid-night. The Lakes State Governor Chol Tong Mayay announced his death on Sunday at the Lakes State SPLM secretariat office with the ministers, party secretariat assistants and secretaries present. Governor Chol passed his condolences to the family of the late Mathiang. He also announced that Lakes State postponed the 16th May SPLA celebrations to an unknown date. However, the family of late Mathiang has requested the State to help transport the body of their father back home from Australia. Governor Chol and Lakes State community with support from the Government of South Sudan assured to facilitate transportation of the late Mathiang’s body from Australia to Rumbek for final burial in the shortest time possible. “With regrets and sorrow, we lost our comrade Samuel Mathiang Keer at 12:20 AM on Saturday in an Australian hospital – Mathiang had a complicated disease leading to his to demise,” Governor Chol said. The governor added, “On behalf of the government of Lakes State, I sincerely pass my heartfelt condolences to the family of late Mathiang. Comrade Mathiang has been struggling with us for so long – I would like to make it clear that the May 16th celebration is postponed until his body is brought to Lakes State and a new date for the SPLA celebrations will be fixed. He thanked the SPLM chairman, comrade Savla Kiir Mayardit and the SPLM party secretary general Pagan Amum Okech for their medical contribution during Mathiang’s most difficult moments. According to a Lakes State student studying in Australia, Mayor Luk who confirmed his death while recalling that, “we received comrade Samuel Mathieng Keer Magok, the Lakes State’s SPLM Secretary General two months ago. He was brought to Australia suffering from an advanced blood cancer.” Luk continued that Mathieng was admitted to Peter hospital in Melbourne, Capital City of Victoria State in Australia for two months. The people of Lakes State in Victoria, the Government of Lakes State and comrade Pagan Amum had financially supported his medical bills unfortunately he passed away this morning 7:00 AM our local time.
