ABYEI OCCUPIED BY JELLABA - WHY► Did SPLM provoke the situation by its unilateral claim of Abyei in its new constitution? SPLM insistence of unilaterally claiming ownership of Abyei in the newly-crafted Draft Transitional Constitution of South Sudan was provocative and also illegal. As per CPA, the status of Abyei would only be decided in a regional referendum for both the Dinka Ngok and other 'residents' of the area. Southerners were clearly surprised why President Kiir and his SPLM/A are in a hurry to declare incorporation of Abyei to the South.
Incidentally, Abyei has now been internationalized with America pushing and exerting pressure on Khartoum to accept the holding of the referendum in the area. Therefore, there was no justification whatsoever for the SPLA and Kiir to belligerently precipitate the current shameful military defeat, fully aware that the SPLA is mortally overwhelmed with internal and tribal divisions, multiple insurrections and corruption where soldiers go for months without pay. In short, the men of the SPLA are badly and needlessly demoralized and don't see any justification to die anymore since their long sacrifice has already brought our independence.
