By Peter Lokale Nakimangole TORIT, 27th May, 2011 [Gurtong] – Eastern Equatoria State has managed to collect 31 firearms comprising of one RBG 7 Rocket launcher and 30 AK 47 guns from local communities, through its ongoing operation ‘Justice and Peace Mission’ headed by the State Deputy Governor, Nartisio Loluke Manir. “The 31 collected weapons were retained in a disarmament exercise conducted in the villages of Torit, Lafon/Lopa and Ikotos Counties,” revealed the State Deputy Police commissioner Colonel Ben Bilal Mamur who heads security forces in the ongoing operation. Governor Loluke who is also the State Minister for Local Government said that his mission was established by the State Council of Ministers over a month ago. The mission aims at guaranteeing security stability as part of peaceful celebrations of the upcoming independence of South Sudan. He said his mission targets to collect more than 250 guns across the State. “In comparison to 6 years back, the present administration has a clear policy in approaching and addressing security issues in the State,” he added. The mission’s head disclosed that the exercise runs successfully because the State Government initially began by establishing a database to target and track the level of insecurity using scientific approaches which include reporting systems, setting up of special units that deal with raiding activities, de-concentration of security forces at towns among others.
