JUBA, 2nd May 2011 [Gurtong] - Amidst volatile situation in the town
of Abyei, volunteers and local activists have stepped up efforts to
mobilize for humanitarian support from any willing persons and
organizations.

The South Sudan Chamber of Commerce, SSCC in collaboration with the
Abyei Solidarity, AS yesterday launched a joint initiative in Juba for
raising much needed humanitarian support for the Internally Displaced
Persons, IDPs of Abyei.

The leadership of the two organizations addressed business community,
press and concerned citizens at the SSCC in Juba. They all stressed
for mass mobilization of resources to rescue the desperate displaced
persons of Abyei.

“The organizations are appealing to the business community, and all
peace loving citizens and friends of South Sudan to stand in
solidarity with the people of Abyei by donating what they can,”
Benjamin Bol Chairperson SSCC said at the press briefing.

The activists are lobbying for tents, dry food items: sugar, oil,
flour, beans; water, clothes and shoes mainly for children; blankets,
sheets, mats among other iteams

Apuk Ayuel is a Member of the AS Committee who went to assess and
monitor the humanitarian situation in Abyei. She said that the
situation was appalling. “We encountered a lot of displaced children
of two to three years old walking long distances,” she said.

Despite efforts of several humanitarian organizations moving to the
ground to rescue the situation, Apuk said that fuel for transportation
appears to be a challenge. Vehicles meant to deliver assistance to the
displaced persons are hindering service delivery.

According to their local findings, about 200,000 IDPs have moved
towards Southern Sudan. Many have resettled in Twich County of Warap
State as others move to Western and Northern Bar el Ghazal capitals of
Wau and Aweil respectively.

The most affected are mothers, young children and old people who can’t
fend for themselves. “The situation is really appalling,” Apuk
described.
