WAU, 7th June, 2011 [Gurtong] - Sudan Government Forces attacked
Omdure town in South Kordofan over the weekend,SPLM’s Information
Officer in Kadugli, Jabir Tutu has confirmed to Gurtong on phone.

The official said that SAF looted weapons from a police station in
Kadugli south Kordofan’s Capital yesterday, there was gunfight in a
village about 30 miles away from Kadugli.

According to Jabir, the SAF moved tanks south from El Obeid through
the Drilling area and stationed them at Kadugli airport and near the
compound of the UN’ s World Food Programme, WFP early on Sunday, some
of tanks were redeployed to Um Dorain town.

Tensions have been growing ahead of South Sudan’s formal independence
from north on the 9thJuly 2011.

South Kordofan is on the northern side of the border with South Sudan
but is home to many Sudanese heroes who fought for the South in
Sudan’s long civil war which ended with a peace deal in 2005.

The UN is currently investigating clashes that broke out in Sudan’s
oil producing State of South Kordofan.

Politicians across the Country morally accuse President Bashir’s
Government of targeting the oil fields in the Country, similarly on
the 21st May, northern troops and militias attacked the disputed
border region of Abyei where tens of thousands evacuated as villages
were burnt down by the armed personnel.

The United Nation’s Security Council called on Khartoum government to
windrow its forces from Abyei but the call was futile.

It’s not yet clear whether yesterday’s attack in Southern Kordofan has
a connection to the last month Abyei’s attack.

Communities here live in tensions since last month following the
Governor Oral election between the NCP and SPLM candidates allegedly
rigged by NCP according to the SPLM candidate.

South Kordofan is controlled by the North but officially home to many
southern-allied soldiers. The State was on the front lines during
Sudan’s civil war.As a result, the fighting involved northern soldiers
rebelling against orders to disarm the southern-allied soldiers.

Analysts say Khartoum central government is trying to assert its
authority over border regions ahead of South Sudan’s formal
declaration of independence in July.
