GoSS Says Media To Report Responsibly To Avoid Clash With Security Organs News from Sudan Radio Service 10 June 2011—(Juba) —The GoSS said that the media has the universal rights of performing its duties within the new nation without further intimidation from the security organs.
In a roundtable meeting between the media and the southern Sudan security organs, GOSS official spokesman, Doctor Barnaba Marial Benjamin said that intimidating the media would mean discrediting the new nation. [Dr. Barnaba Marial]: “Our greatest responsibility is also to provide a secure environment where we would like our security services to recognize their role in welcoming this environment and assisting their government so that the press is allowed the process by which they can be able to freely report positively or negatively for the benefit of the new republic of south Sudan. We would never wish to see that the hand of the government through its security services may become too heavy, which may sometimes hamper the good image of having a free press that actually reports not only to the people of south Sudan, but also to the international community in a fair manner –that indeed will assist the young republic to be assisted both internationally and also to be accepted as a new nation recognizing the big.” However, Doctor Marial cautioned the media to report responsibly as the country moves towards it full independence on the 9th of July, this year. Senior members of both print and electronic media appealed to GOSS to build the capacity of security personnel that will be dealing directly with the media houses in the region. The two day roundtable meeting between the media and the southern Sudan security organs is being facilitated by UNDP and UNMIS in Juba in order to create a friendly environment between news agencies and security agencies in south Sudan. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JFD info" group.
