Report on our work with Civil Society
June 1st, 2011
Justice Africa has been working with civil society in Juba for the
last year and a half. Good progress has been made in assisting civil
society to engage in the political process and to consolidate itself
as a principled community of civic actors, yet much remains to be
done. As Southern Sudan faces the future, the roles and
responsibilities of Southern Sudanese civil society, with respect to
its own constituencies, the Government of Southern Sudan, and the
international community, will change. Southern Sudanese civil society
will face a new dawn with a different set of challenges.

In view of these challenges, Justice Africa is supporting Southern
Sudanese civil society to convene a national civil society convention
in the next months with the aim of thinking through the role of civil
society in the next stage of the nation’s history. The proposed
convention will bring together 200 prominent civil society leaders to
discuss the challenges of civil society in state-building and to forge
a civic agenda.

Following the convention a number of initiatives will be necessary in
order to support civil society to defend the civic agenda set within
the national convention.

In addition to this, Justice Africa wishes to continue supporting
civil society in raising it’s capacity to advocate for their their
collective interests and help raise their awareness about the issues
which they have identified are important to them.
