FAO: 8 million people threatened by drought in Horn of Africa

Drought is threatening the lives of more than 8 million people in the
Horn of Africa, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on
Tuesday, adding that the effects of poor rainfall are being worsened
by high food and fuel prices in the region.

There have been two consecutive seasons of poor rainfall in the Horn
of Africa resulting in failed crop production, depletion of grazing
resources and the death of livestock. According to FAO, high levels of
acute malnutrition are widespread in the region.

FAO pointed out that very high food and fuel prices are making it even
more difficult for poor households to buy food. The agency says that
affected people in Djibouti, Kenya and Somalia are in need of
emergency assistance.
