JUBA, 18th June 2011 [Gurtong]-South Sudan launched her National
Anthem yesterday; three weeks ahead of her Independence to be held in
9th July 2011. Government officials, Diplomats, Civil society
activists and nationalists from the ten States convened in Nyakuron
Cultural Centre, Juba to witness the launch.

H.E Cirino Hiteng, the Minister of Presidential Affairs of the
Government of Southern Sudan who graced the occasion declared that;
“this is the official launch of the South Sudan national anthem.”

The Minister urged Southerners to practice the anthem for perfect
presentation during the celebration and recognition of the
Independence Day on 9th July 2011 to be graced in Juba.

As part of the efforts to improve the quality of the anthem’s
presentation by the choirs whom the Minister referred to as “National
choirs”, Cirino pledged 300,000 Sudanese Pounds about (100,000 US $)
to be allocated to the choirs.

The GOSS Minister of Information and Broadcasting H.E Dr. Barnaba
Marial Benjamin emphasized that, singing of the anthem was so
different from any other song and urged South Sudanese practitioners
to maintain the meaning of the anthem.

Marial added that, words like unity, harmony peace which advocates for
one tribe in the new nation of the Republic of South Sudan should be
remembered always.

The over one minute time interval anthem consists of three stanzas
portraying different meanings: Stanza one portrays South Sudanese’
trust in God and thanking God for the peace, freedom and resources he
has given to the long time marginalized people.

Stanza Two speaks about the core values of the people of South Sudan
and their jubilation for having their rights to self determination
after decades of suffering, oppression, slavery, marginalization and
suppression.

And the last stanza memorizes the martyrs: Heroes and Heroine who have
lost their lives for the sake of freedom of the people of the new
nation to be announce.

The official National Anthem of the Republic of South Sudan:

Oh God
We praise and glorify you
For your grace on South Sudan
Land of great abundance
Upholds us united in peace and harmony
Oh motherland

We arise raising flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy
For justice, liberty and prosperity
Shall forevermore reign
Oh great patriots

Let us stand up in silence and respect
Saluting our martyrs whose blood
Cemented our national foundation
We vow to protect our nation
Oh God bless South Sudan
