The Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) said that it has found thousands of
explosives and live ammunition in Unity State, during an operation
coordinated by South Sudan's National Mine Action Authority. A press
release issued NPA said it found over 8,000 unexploded ordnance (UXO)
and more than 30,000 live small arms rounds.

The NPA Project Manager, John Sorbo, said that Unity state remains one
of the most contaminated states in the region. He further added that
several minefields and a high number of abandoned ordnance are
contaminating huge areas of land in the sate.

He said that these hazards pose a direct threat to residents, as well
as development agencies that are unable to access many areas.
