JUBA, 28th June, 2011 [Gurtong] - The South Sudan Police Service, SSPS
yesterday received 300,000 Euros worth of health facilities from
Deutsche Gesellschaft for International Zusammenarbeit Gmbh, GIZ to
assist communities in Juba.

The handover ceremony was held at Dr. John Garang Unified Police
Training Centre at Rajaf, Juba, witnessed by the German Ambassador
Designate, Peter Felt and the South Sudan Inspector General of Police,
IGP Gen. Acuil Tito Madut.

The aid came following a request by the SSPS to establish a health
facility at the training centre; the aid is to assist Southern Sudan
in enhancing effective training of her national forces.

The Training Centre Commander Col. Abednego Akol Anyuong explained
during his delivery speech that, following the set up of the training
centre early last year, trainees and the community around had been
suffering from treatable diseases as; diarrhoea, typhoid, malaria
among many others.

“There has been lack of health facilities to provide health services
for the community. This donation is a big gift to the people of South
Sudan,” Abednego said.

The training Centre accommodates nearly 7,000 to 8,000 trainees and
staffs yearly.

The donation included drugs mainly for the three diseases,
photocopiers, an Ambulance, surgical facilities, beds, laboratory
equipments and related materials.

The Training Centre Director Maj. General Jakson Elia said that, the
set up Health Centre now treats about 300 patients a week.

He noted that, despite the efforts that had been put to rectify the
health facilities at the centre; water still remained a challenge to
sustain the population. According to him, there are only two boreholes
set up at the Centre, shared by the Centre’s occupants and the
community around.

GIZ Southern Sudan Country Director, Dr. Manfred Van Eckert pledged
further commitments in supporting the South Sudan police sector in
capacity building.

Meanwhile Ambassador Peter Felter described the GIZ support as
significant and timely as the region is soon to be independent.

He urged the South Sudan’s police to deliver an exemplary service
based on high level of human dignity and respect.
