plane was flying low. The plane looked like an Antonov but did not
sound like one. It sounded as if it had jet engines but not sure.

11.  July 2, 2011

- At 12:10pm, Antonov flew over Kauda Valley. North to South.

- At 1:03pm, Antonov flew west of Kauda Valley. South to North.

12. The initial fighting in Heiban was not too fierce. The SAF
component within the JIU was flushed out by their SPLA colleagues.
Nuba in the SAF JIU chose to be with their kin. It was one of the
quickest operations in Nuba. It took SPLA less than two hours to
control Heiban. There were atrocities by government forces but
currently no details. Heiban is calm now and defended by SPLA. SAF
tried to attack through Um Burumbita but were badly defeated and
retreated to Abu Gibeha. Most people are in the mountains and only
come down for food and water.

13. From an interview with a SAF soldier who defected to SPLA in
Heiban (the interviewer has his name). He "joined SPLA because of
injustice and marginalisation of the government". He said there must
be equality and justice. He worked for SAF more than 20 years, but was
waiting for a chance to get out. There was no torture by SPLA and he
was not forced to join them. Two others defected with him but did not
want to speak for fear of reprisals.
