Bishop Caesar was an old friend of mine. I like to think that he would have found it fitting to have lived to see Independence Day, and to die in the new Republic of South Sudan. Below are two reports of his death this morning, 16th July 2011. RIP. John BEGIN 1. Dear Friends, I write to you this morning to share with you the sad news of the very sudden and unexpected passing on of our beloved bishop, His Lordship Caesar Mazzolari of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, that happened around 8 a.m. today, Saturday, July 16, 2011, the memorial of Our Lady of Mount. Carmel. Bishop was concelebrating at the morning Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Justin Atit, Director Healing the Healers. Right at the beginning of consecration, the late fell back on his chair in what seemed a total lack of strength, raised his head which fell back beyond the back of the chair, and was clearly gasping for breath with his left hand holding firmly on his chest. With the help of fathers, sisters and some faithful, the late was carried to the sacristy and a few minutes later to his room, while a Rumbek-based doctor was being contacted. Dr. Chan Deng Malual of Rumbek Hospital advised that bishop be brought to the hospital. The late Bishop was driven to the State Hospital where the doctor was waiting. Dr. Chan pronounced the bishop dead after carrying out some basic tests. Some Bishops of the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) have been contacted, including the President, His Eminence Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako. The Bishop of Wau, H.L Rudolf Deng Majak is expected in Rumbek this evening. Members of the Comboni Family have also been contacted. Members of his family in Brescia, Italy, have also been informed. Funeral arrangements will be communicated later, after liaising with the SCBC and the Comboni Family. We thank the Lord for the life of Bishop Caesar Mazzolari, who leaves behind a legacy of a life well lived. May the Lord give his soul a peaceful rest in eternal glory. Amen Fr. The Catholic Bishop of Rumbek collapsed this morning while at mass and died. Bishop Caesar Mazzolari was concelebrating the Eucharist at the Holy Family Cathedral in Rumbek when he felt unwell. He reached for his chair and collapsed. Fr. Don Bosco Ochieng from Good News Radio told SCR News that the bishop was rushed immediately to Rumbek Hospital where he died. A doctor said the bishop most likely suffered a heart attack. Fr. Fernando Colombo, who was Rumbek's Vicar General, said Bishop Mazzolari suffered from heart problems. He added that the bishop kept on pushing until he spent his life completely. Bishop Mazzolari, a Comboni Missionary from Italy, was 74. He served as Apostolic Administrator of Rumbek since 1990, and was ordained its Bishop in 1999.
