July 17, 2011 (JUBA) – The President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has summoned all the governors of the ten states in the region to discuss the future of the newly independent nation. On Sunday the President met with the governors in his office who traveled to Juba from their respective states on Saturday. In a press statement after their meeting, the governor of Jonglei state, Kuol Manyang Juuk, said they were called by the president to come to Juba and discuss issues to do with “security, good governance and development” in the country. Kuol said in the meeting each of the ten states governors briefed the president about the current situation in their respective states and how they have been handling them. South Sudan formally became independent on July 9, following the self-determination’s referendum in January this year that resulted to overwhelming vote for secession from the rest of Sudan after 55 years of armed struggle. The referendum was provided for in the peace accord that ended the war between North and South Sudan in 2005. The new nation is to be governed by a new transitional constitution for the next four years which has given the President the power to remove elected governor and dissolve parliament when deemed necessary.
