Subject: Photo essay - South Sudan: Before the Secession
To: Jean-Francois Darcq <[email protected]>

On 9 July 2011 South Sudan declared independence and, less than a week
later, became the 193rd Member State of the United Nations on 14 July 2011.

South Sudan: Before the Secession, a new photo essay published on the Small
Arms Survey website, captures some of the turmoil and pain that local
communities experienced prior to and during the January 2011 referendum,
which paved the way for the secession. With support from the Small Arms
Survey’s Sudan Human Security Baseline Assessment (HSBA) project,
photographer Trevor Snapp travelled to South Sudan to document armed
violence and the proliferation of small arms and traditional weapons in the
region.

The photos provide a glimpse of some of the difficulties in administering
the war-ravaged and impoverished region, showing the culture of violence and
retribution that has infused local communities as they struggle to survive.
