South Sudan needs to unite its Political Ranks in the dawn of Nation's independent By Lok Franco Kok, South Sudan
JULY 26/2011, SSN; After a long awaited independence, South Sudan became a widely recognized independent state throughout the entire world. South Sudan civil society welcomes with open heart the independence which brought them to the end of their long struggle that lost millions of lives. However, many Southern Political parties showed no satisfaction on the nation's interim constitution, which they claimed was written in favor of the ruling SPLM party. Some of these parties withdrew from the constitutional review committee accusing SPLM of comprising the majority of the committee and declined their suggestions on draft constitution. Despite their withdrawal, they remained committed members fulfilled their task and write the South Sudan interim Constitution that will apparently guide the People for four years interim period until next presidential election. In terms of political instability in South Sudan, it is undeniable that the country has had some difficult moments during the last six years. However, the South Sudanese situation is not as bleak as always portrayed in the media. In this context, South Sudan has seen its freedom heroes turn into dictators, while plunder of natural resources, politics of exclusion and deprivation to tilt the balance of power continues to dominate the public sphere. Moreover, these problems have been pointed out and fought gallantly by Southern Sudanese who have over the years expressed their discontent with a regime imposed upon them, through the complicity of their own government. To date, South Sudan is still haunted by historical injustices and oppression by National authority. War is no solution and talks should be the only way forward between the opposition and the ruling SPLM. The government would work hand-in-hand with the opposition parties to resolve all outstanding issues peacefully. This is an aspect which informs the weak institutions of the state, flawed legislative systems and constant struggles for political power to the detriment of the well being of the nation, which could have moved on a path of development as part of modern societies. The South Sudan political instability and other related problems are basically a consequence of its leadership problem, lack of transparency, injustice and lack of equality. The government’s first priority could be the unity, reconciliation and well-being of the people of South Sudan for which peace and stability are vital. After decades of living under oppressive dictatorships, the people of the South Sudan have reached their final destination. It means there is a significant level of satisfaction among the citizens of a Country or State. There is need, specially this time for all political forces to change the ordinary track of practicing tribal politics and stop to spread tribal animosity on tribal lines. The Nation's civil population should potentially avoid tribalism and nepotism to achieve peace and reconciliation. For political and diplomatic reasons, South Sudan politicians should carefully accept the term "political unification" during the run-up to what the international community should adore. The first test facing the former rivals will be forming an interim government that the constitution says will be run by politically independent state. The overwhelming tension in South Sudan was the result of political disagreement between the opposition parties and the ruling SPLM party. The rising number of internal armed rebellions has in many ways a clear connections to the lack of democratic processes in South Sudan for the last six years. Continued fighting has challenged government capacity to manage domestic conflict. After many attempts, the government failed to bring the opposition parties to table. The resultant storm was blamed on the leadership of the SPLM because it reflected on their refusal to transform into true democratic political leaders and organization. There have been mixed reactions from opposition parties to the outcome of the draft constitution. But as security and South Sudan civilians' stability is the priority, all differences should be covered up and all works should focus on the challenges ahead of the new nation. In order to address the theme and relevance of peace in South Sudan, there is need to reflect on and critically analyze the root causes of all problems that are in sight facing the new nation !
