JUBA, 8th August, 2011 – The Global Fund, an international institution
financing projects leading the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis
(TB) and malaria, will grant the Republic of South Sudan membership on
the 15th August 2011.

This was announced by the Country Coordinating Mechanism – South Sudan
(CCM-SS) secretariat during a one-day orientation workshop for its new
2011-2013 members at the Heron Campsite Hotel in Juba on Friday.

During the workshop, the facilitators briefed the new members on the
role of the Global Fund in fighting HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria in South
Sudan. They emphasized that the Global Fund is an innovative
partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector,
and the affected communities.

They also clarified that the Global Fund is just a funding instrument
and not an implementing agency. It seeks to make available and
leverage the additional financial resources necessary to achieve
national goals in the fight against the three diseases.

The participants were also introduced to the CCM-SS constitution,
governance manual, and the conflict of interest policy. These
documents need to be adopted to facilitate the admission of the CCM-SS
to the Global Fund membership.

Once admitted to the Global Fund, the CCM-SS will play a significant
role as the national agency which will oversee and safeguard the
implementation of projects funded by the Global Fund which is based in
Geneva.
