YAMBIO, 30th August 2011 [Gurtong] - The head of Banking Regulations,
Policies and Licensing at the Central Bank of South Sudan Dr. John
Yien Tut, who led the currency conversion teams in Western Equatoria
State (WES) has revealed that currency conversion exercise in State
was peaceful and orderly.

Dr. John Yien Tut explained to Gurtong that he divided the exchange
teams in two, one to the east and the other to the west from Mvolo to
Nagero with a 45-days deadline. The main team coordinated with smaller
sub-committees in WES led by Hon Evans Doctor the Minister of Finance
in WES.

At the beginning it was hard for Dr. John to adapt to the vast
locations in the State. It was a surprise for him to learn that there
were 10 Counties in WES. Nevertheless he strategized on how to divide
and cover all the States.

He further mentioned that anyone who appeared after the grace period
for conversion with a lot of Sudanese Pounds for exchange had to go
through some procedures in order to investigate where the money was
coming from since the committee feared money laundry or cases of
counterfeit especially with the 20SDG denomination.

Dr. John said that they faced a lot of challenges at the start with
long queues but with the help of the County commissioners and Payam
administrators the exercise went on smoothly. In Yambio town (the
Capital of WES) additional tellers were recruited from the Kenya
Commercial Bank to speed up the process.

Other challenges include poor transport system in the State. Heavy
downpour cut off some of the main roads connecting Counties hence
transporting cash was impossible. The bridge between Tombura county
and Nagero county was completely damaged forcing the commissioner of
Nagero County to travel with armed security escort up to the bridge
where he linked with the Currency Exchange team from Tombura.

The currency conversion team managed to exchange about 40 million SDGs from WES.

Dr. John thanked the Western Equatoria State Governor Hon. Bangasi
Joesph Bakosoro for the organised security personnel during the
exercise. He also appreciated the daily updates as aired by Yambio
90.0 fm radio station and all the State parliamentarians for spending
time to support the currency conversion teams in various villages of
WES.
