Right, solved it.

short_open_tag is the cause. If you turn it on at the command line or within a custom php.ini it apparently has no effect. I had to get a script to run through the source code search and replace <? for <?php and afterwards the script runs fine, and I get graphs.

Suggest this is fixed for the next version. Shouldn't have any reason for <? nowadays, and any XML would be killed.

The log/ folder will not be filled if you don't have the Debugging/Logging option enabled in setup.php

And the rrd/ files has to be created by the poller.
