We are looking at implementing JFFNMS to monitor over 700 Cisco
routers and switches. Initial plan is to just replace MRTG as our
performance monitor. Other functions will be implemented later on.
There are a couple of differences between the two programs that I
would like information on.

1. I would like to understand how the RRD files and Graphing is
implemented within JFFNMS.

My understanding is that MRTG keeps track of a single day of polling
and then condenses historical data into ever larger chunks of
averages. A 'withpeak' configuration parameter provides the option of
keeping track of the max value within each chunk of data. With the
two values graphed one can see the average utilization along with the
peaks that were experienced. A useful tool when looking at condensed
information.

>From what I have been able to find on the mailing list, I understand
that JFFNMS does not condense any RRD data. The files are created
with the capacity of holding a year's worth of 5 min polls. Is this
true? Is there any compression done, be it within the graphing
process or elsewhere? Would there be any value in adding a MAX Peak
traffic line on the graphs or would the line just follow the Average?

2. With MRTG we are currently monitoring some interfaces on a
one-minute polling cycle. I believe our reasoning behind this is
outdated but I would like to find out what capabilities JFFNMS has in
this capacity.

What I have found so far... When selecting a host with one minute
polling cycles and the new poller the expected snmp traffic occurs in
one-minute intervals. When looking at the graphs generated, they are
still in 5-minute steps. The interface polling is set to: "When
Poller Runs" and the rrd files were deleted and recreated. Am I
missing a configuration step, or is this as expected?

I am very impressed with what I see so far and commend you on the work
you have done.

Rob
