It turns out my problem stemmed from a number of things. 1) I apparently left the "from" blank on the email alert, that was fine once I fixed it. 2) Once it got through my thick skull that triggers fire off of alarms/events. The trigger setup made much more sense. I've since gotten my custom action working wonderfully.
