Using the mysql command line I was able to connect to the jffnms database and view the tables using the account jffnms and password jffnms . This is the same database user and password defined in the JFFNMS config. JFFNMS and the database are on the same server. Still getting the is the database working?" line as "no".

Try using the mysql command line, make sure you type the host, user, password and database as exactly as you have it in the JFFNMS config.
