ok problem has been resolved.

Based on Craig's advice I tried SNMP walking the machines that had turned red, and not 1 of them returned properly.

That got me thinking on what may have changed.  On Friday we changed the trunk cable between the rack switch & the main switch from cat5e to cat6 but did not remember anything else.  Then I remembered that yesterday morning I had to get to JFFNMS via the IP address instead of the DNS alias I had setup.  Upon further investigation it showed that whilst the DNS alias was still there, the A-record was not - so I re-added it and thought everything was fine and dandy.

Once I tried the snmpwalk and couldn't get a response I tried restarting the SNMP agent on the WinXP / Win2k3 machine and that solved that problem.  On the Win2k servers I needed to remove / re-add the entry in the SNMP "allowed hosts" list under the security tab of the SNMP service agent.

It would appear that the Windows SNMP agent does not like it when the DNS alias points to an A record that doesn't exist and is unable to recover from the situation without manual intervention.

Yes on Friday we changed the trunk cable from the rack switch to the main switch from Cat5e to Cat6, no changes were made on the machines.
