The best platform is the one that your administrators know how to
support the best.  Unix-like ones are better than windows if you have
the skill-set because a lot more of the funcitons work better and it
is easier to debug when things go wrong on a command line.

I'd avoid Vmware, to me there is usually no point to run it on
production servers; unless you have specific unsual requirements.

You will get the best performance by putting your database and JFFNMS
stuff onto different servers. Tweak your database nicely, which is
something a decent DBA should know how to do.
