Hi Pedro We've been doing email to SMS for some time now using clickatell as our gateway.
It costs money of course, but much better than maintaining something like an SMS modem, especially remotely. We Ditched our SMS modem for just that reason. I am not sure where you are, but pagenet in Canada ( and also US I think ) can provide email to pager. Most paging services should be able to do same. I hope this helps.
