Hello,
  As David said, tuning your RRDfiles helps, a lot.   Changing the
number of poller children will also make a big difference too as you can
build up a large bank of pollers.

Some other things I know people have looked at are the rrdcached and
doing some filesystem or disk work to get them faster.
 
Gaps in the graph is often a poller taking too long problem and that is
often caused by too slow RRD work.
