OK, I'm an idiot. I (obviously) was trying to fsck the drive and not the partition. Sorry about that, and thanks for the sorting me out. I got freaked out by the kernel panic, and I guess I panicked. I'll fix my fstab to fsck the partition on bootup automatically.
